Outline

• The 2017 ISA Junior World Championships will take place at Okuraghama Beach, Kyushu, Japan from September 29th to October 2nd.
• Surfing South Africa does not have funding to cover the costs of sending a South African Junior Team to Japan. The Surfing South Africa Board has made the decision to proceed with the selection of a 2017 SA Junior Team & Squad.
• Participation of a South African Team in a 2017 ISA Junior World Championships will depend on whether the necessary funds can be raised by selected team members
• After selection Team members and Squad members will be required to make an immediate “deposit” payment to Surfing South Africa as a commitment to their participation in the 2017 SA Team process.
• This “deposit” will be refunded to surfers who are not included in the SA Junior Team.
• There is no guarantee that an SA Junior Team will compete in Japan due to high costs however, every effort will be made to ensure that South Africa is represented in Japan

Selection of the members of the South African Junior Team & South African Junior Squad

• The SA Junior Team will be made up of the top four boys and top two girls in each division on the points tally.
• The SA Junior Squad will be the top eight boys and top four girls in each division on the points tally.
• The surfers picked to represent  South Africa at the ISA World Junior Champs will be selected solely from the points accumulated from three out of the four SAST & WSL events listed below.
• In order to be selected for the SA Junior Team & SA Junior Squad, surfers will be required to surf in at least three of the four selection events.
• Counting the best three results out of four will provide for any unavoidable absences from a single event.

In the exceptional case where a surfer is unable to compete in three qualifying events because they are competing in a major international event or events, that surfer may make a formal request to Surfing South Africa at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. prior to competing internationally for previous premier event results and ratings to be considered when the SA Junior Team is selected.

The events that will be used for selection are:

U16 Divisions

1. Billabong Junior Series Pollock Beach, PE: March 25th  & 26th – PE – 3A Rated SAST
2. Nahoon Junior Open Nahoon Beach, ELS: April 30th, 31st & May 1st  – ELS – 3A Rated SAST
3. BOS Cape Crown Kommetjie, CTN: May 20th & 21st  – Long Beach – 3A Rated SAST
4. Billabong Junior Series Ballito, KZN: June 27th – 29th – 3A Rated SAST

U18 Divisions

1. Buffalo City Pro Nahoon Reef, ELS: April 15th – 17th  – ELS  - JQS1000 WSL Pro Junior
2. Durban Surf Pro New Pier, KZN: April 21st – 23rd  – Dbn – JQS1000 WSL Pro Junior
3. BOS Cape Crown Kommetjie, CTN: May 20th & 21st  – Long Beach – 3A Rated SAST
4. Billabong Junior series Ballito, KZN: June 27th – 29th  – JQS1000 WSL Pro Junior

Surfing South Africa is committed to transformation within surfing.

The SA Junior Team will include at least two surfers from a transformation background.

If there are no transformation surfers among the top four boys or top two girls in the U18 or U16 divisions respectively based on points, then the transformation surfers with the highest rank on the accumulated points tally will replace the lowest non-transformation surfer or surfers in the top four or two respectively.

The above process will also be used when selecting the SA Junior Squad.

• Points will be the overriding factor in determining the SA Team and the SA Squad but the Selection Committee and the Board of Directors may use their discretion as granted in the Constitution to exclude an individual or individuals from inclusion in the team or squad.
• This might relate to Code of Conduct issues or other areas of concern.
• If a team member cannot pay the required amount then their position will be offered, in order of points achieved to surfers selected into the squad.
• Non squad members will not be eligible for selection under any circumstances.
• The SSA Board may decide to send an incomplete team as long as the team is made up of members from the squad
• The SA Junior Team that attends the ISA World Junior Championships will receive full South African Protea Colours.
• The Squad will receive SSA Junior Surfing Colours.

Selection conditions

1. All Team and Squad members must turn at least 14 in the year of competition (2017) in order to be included in this process.
2. All Team and Squad members must hold a valid South African passport and all team members who are Under 18 must be in possession of unabridged Birth Certificates.
3. Selected members must commit to traveling & staying with the Team while at the WJSC. No private arrangements will be permitted.
4. Team and Squad members must pay the deposit set by SSA by the specified date.
5. Selected Team members must pay all requested payments by the strict deadlines set.
6. Team members must sign a formal Commissioner of Oaths affidavit agreeing to abide by the SSA and Sport and Recreation Codes of Conduct
7. Team members must formally and in writing agree to the SSA zero tolerance policy on the use of alcohol or any other prohibited substances at all times while representing South Africa at home and abroad.
8. Surfers who break this rule during the Squad camps or at the ISA WJSC will be sent home immediately at their own expense.

 Any surfer who fails to comply with the above conditions before traveling will lose their place in the Team to the next ranked surfer in the Squad.

Coaching

Surfing South Africa will invite ISA Level 2 accredited coaches in South Africa to apply to be one of three Provincial South African Squad coaches.

Provincial coaches will have the following responsibilities:

• Organize & run five half day training sessions in their Province for squad members. Squad members will be required pay for this coaching at rates determined by Surfing South Africa.
• Communicate with other provincial coaches on Squad member’s progress.
• Attend at least one Squad training camp.
• Attend as many events in their respective Provinces as possible to support squad members.

SA Junior Team Coaches

• The cost of sending Coaches and the Manager to the ISA WJSC will be covered by team members.
• High costs of travelling to and staying in Japan are the possible obstacles that may prevent a South African Team from attending the ISA WJSC
• The two coaches who will travel with the SA Team to the ISA WJSC will come from the Provincial Coaches who work with the squad
• These appointments will be made by the SSA Board in terms of the Constitution.

• Participation in a SA Junior Squad Championships which will be held during the Camp.
• Regular feedback & support from provincial coaches at WSL & SAST events
• Online support and advice from Provincial Coaches based on clips sent to these Coaches.
