Boost for surfing in Richards Bay

On a hot and windy summer day, The Community Surf Classic, powered by First Wave Surf School, took place this past Saturday at Alkantstrand, Richards Bay. How good was it to see a surfing competition happening on the beach again after a good few years of dormancy on the contest side?

The surf was small and weak with waves few and far between but that did not diminish the enthusiasm of the 40 entrants who came down to battle it out for glory and some serious prizes donated by Ryd Brand and Bodyline. The groms were frothing and cheering each other on, there were families and spectators enjoying the day and holding on to their gazebos, seasoned competitors riding against those in their first ever surfing comp and just a terrific vibe on the beach. There was even "real" coffee and burgers on hand thanks to the crew from Neighbourhood Coffee.

The aim of the event, and for future similar competitions, is to grow the sport of surfing in the area and to expose the up and coming generation of surfers to competive surfing. In addition to regular contests, the organisers would like to see the local district surfing association back up and running and sending surfers in their respective age groups to SA Champs. This event on Saturday saw an amazing 18 entrants in the U/12 Division who got to compete and see how competitions work and how they are run as well as watch the older crew in action.

At the end of the day surfing was the winner but there were also prize winners who collected cash, boards and product. On behalf of the organisers, Surf Alliance would like to mention and thank the following for making the day such a success. Gerrit Loots and family and crew, Neighbourhood Coffee, the sponsors, volunteer judges, helpers, lifeguards and all those who took part on the day…Cheers.. it was a long and hot day.. but was so awesome to have an event again.. Here’s to many more!

For those interested in developing the sport in our area, there will be a meeting of the King Cetshwayo Surfriders Association at a date to be confirmed. Anyone keen is welcome to attend. Keep an eye out in the local press and social media platforms for the date and time. Those interested in joining the First Wave Surf School can contact Seudia for more information on 064 529 0753.
